5 million email usernames and passwords were recently published on a Russian forum, creating yet another controversy on how secure our online accounts really are. The emails were leaked through phishing and hacking techniques and were compiled over the years from unsuspecting individuals. Although Google has released a statement that these hacks were done against individuals, their own email system was never breached.
Several measures are already in place to keep your passwords secure, one of which is using a password manager. These types of software stores and encrypts your passwords across multiple sites and is only accessible by a single master password. Google has also released a 2 step verification that protects your online accounts by entering a verification code after keying in your passwords.
